ABOUT OUR FRAMES

Do you offer custom frames?
We sure do! Send us an enquiry via social media or email at info@thequirkybeetle.com.au

What is museum glass?
All the frames we make here at The Quirky Beetle use a special UV blocking glass. This is the type of glass you will see in museum displays. It's designed to help prolong the life of your preserved buggies and keep them looking bright and beautiful for many years to come. This type of glass is also quite non reflective, because we want our bugs to shine, not the glass!

Where do these butterflies and bugs come from?
These specimens are responsibly sourced from different butterfly ranches across the world, which aid in butterfly conservation. For more information, check out our Ethics page.

Where is my frame best displayed?
Display your frame anywhere you like – just avoid direct sun to keep the colours from fading.

How do I best protect my frames from damage?
It is important to avoid humidity as this can cause mould within the frame. Another thing to watch out for is damage from other bugs. Here at The Quirky Beetle, specimens are treated on arrival and our finished frames are sealed to the best of our ability to prevent insect attack. However, specimens can still be vulnerable to this. Check your specimen often, and if at any point you see what appears to be lots of dust coming off your specimen, you’ll need to put it in a container or zip lock bag and place it in the freezer. Leave your specimen in the freezer for at least 3 days before removing it and allowing it naturally to come back to room temperature.

Are these wild caught animals?
Absolutely not. These are specimens that have been raised as part of breeding programmes which assist wild populations. You can read more on our Ethics page. Insect specimens are still caught from the wild for scientific purposes, but rarely for these types of displays as wild caught specimens will have very noticeable damage to their wings.

Is it true butterflies only live for one day?
Not exactly. However, many beautiful species of butterfly do only live a short time – for example some of the beautiful Morpho butterfly species only live around 10 days.

Why don’t you sell framed bats?
Bat populations throughout Asia (where these bats are usually sourced) are in decline. The collection of bats for display purposes is not regulated and has very negative impacts on the environment. Bats, much like insects, are very important pollinators, and are important for the environment’s genetic diversity. Microbats are also incredibly important in the food chain, helping to keep insect populations balanced.

Will my butterfly/bug be the exact frame pictured on the website?
Due to the fact these are natural creatures, and each individual may have a slightly varying shape, colour and size. We sell only A1 (highest quality possible) specimens unless otherwise stated in the products description.
